optional enhancement of the software-based Harmonic
PURE Compression Engine™, EyeQ is unique in its ability
to assess and adjust encoding parameters, leveraging the
mechanics of the human visual system (HVS) without adding
latency to the encoding process. It achieves this by weighing
the importance of HVS sensitivities like changes in contrast
and texture against less relevant elements in a video frame,
optimizing the balance bet ween video quality and bandwidth
better than competing techniques, such as constant bitrate
(CBR) or capped variable bitrate (CVBR) encoding.
Unlike CVBR, the EyeQ solution does not rely on
pseudo-linear scaling of picture- and scene-level quant
measurements. Rather, it relies on “quality awareness” to
fully measure visual quality in real time. In-loop artificial
intelligence then guides the codec to focus bits where and
when they matter most for the viewer and reduce bits where
they matter less. In this way, the EyeQ solution uses only the
bits needed to hit quality targets, which translates into more
consistent video quality and significant bandwidth savings.

Harmonic’s EyeQ content-aware encoding offers several
notable benefits for OT T service providers. One distinctive
advantage is that the encoder can be set to a higher peak
rate to maintain quality in complex video segments. This
capability enables some infrequent but difficult sequences
to use more bits, while overall bandwidth usage is still much
reduced versus CBR encoding. For example, in a relatively
simple 90-second sequence with a single complex video
transition, an EyeQ stream with a peak rate of 6.8Mbps would
consume much less than a stream with a constant rate of
4.2Mbps, yet the overall quality of experience for the viewer
would be improved.
Rebuffering ratio and startup delay are key metrics
to measure end-user satisfaction. Both are significantly
improved by EyeQ’s lower bit rates, especially over wireless
connections such as Wi-Fi or 4G.
The EyeQ solution is 100% H.264 compliant, so there are
no changes to today’s ecosystem, whether it’s based on
appliances, virtual machines, cloud infrastructure, or SaaS,
lowering the total cost of ownership for video infrastructure.
Moreover, EyeQ is interoperable with existing decoders. No
changes need to be made to end-user devices in order to
stream content encoded by EyeQ. The deployment of EyeQ is
made simple via a software license.
By reducing video traffic by up to 50%, EyeQ delivers
significant opex and capex savings at different points in
the system. Storage capacity for VOD and CDVR, traffic
delivered to end users or to ISPs is also reduced by 50% which,
in some cases, substantially improves the business model
