3 Rivers Communications purchased t wo OnRamps in
2009, and two more in 2011. “We use two each at two head
ends—one main and one back-up,” says Allum. One main
system receives five over-the-air channels plus subchannels,
and the other main system receives four over-the-air
channels plus subchannels. “We ingest the IP streams to the
digital TV system and transport them to customers’ set-top
boxes over fiber to the home,” says Allum.
The Linux®-based systems support MPEG- 2 input and
output or H.264 input and output, but do not transcode. The
resulting IP streams can be viewed with standard IP-capable
set-top boxes or streaming video software clients such as VLC
or J W Player. IP output protocols are UDP, RTP, and HT TP.
The OnRamps feature an easy-to-use GUI with remote
configuration management via a web browser and secure
command line interface (SSH). The systems can report their
status to remote net work operations via SNMP. And if needed,
DVEO’s tech support team can troubleshoot and configure
the devices remotely.
After almost nine years, Steve Allum is still very happy
with the reliability of the OnRamps. “Our video product
would not be able to survive without them because carrying
the local channels is an absolute must,” he says. “We had one
power supply fail, and we had to put in a couple of new cards,
but that’s to be expected over such a long time.”

can also custom build systems that accept multiple formats.
