or datacenter. By running your containerized encoder as a
service, you can treat all of your infrastructures as different
regions within the one infrastructure, which will give you the
best of both worlds.
Optimizations in a Hybrid Infrastructure
The previous paragraphs we have discussed the pros and
cons of both the public cloud and on-prem solutions. The
hybrid cloud creates a scenario where it is possible to combine
the two and get the best of both worlds. Hybrid encoding
solutions are controlled by a central API that integrates every
aspect of the video workflow from input through to storage.
At the beginning of the chain, an input file is collected from
a storage location, either in the cloud or in a local datacenter,
or in the case of a live streaming scenario, directly from the
source of the stream. The API controls what happens next
based on your configuration.
Because a hybrid infrastructure can switch bet ween
public, private, and datacenter regions, it has enormous
potential for optimization. For example, a local datacenter will
always have a limited capacity, but apart from using a little
more electricity, there is no difference between running at
5% capacity and 95% capacity. Your API could be configured
to send all encoding jobs through the local datacenter until a
specific CPU usage is reached, and then start sending jobs to
your public cloud region. This would maximise your internal
resources and minimise cloud expenditure.
In other cases, security is an important issue, and certain
business-critical content needs to be kept behind the safety of
your firewall. In these situations the API can simply send the
job to the local datacenter, ensuring a high level of security.
