Conventional adaptive bitrate streaming media players
adapt to network conditions but have no knowledge of the
visual complexity of the scene that they represent. As a result,
they tend to request streams at the highest possible bitrate that
can be maintained by the network, irrespective of the visual
complexity of each scene. This leads to inefficiency for scenes
of low complexity that do not necessarily benefit from a higher
bitrate. Conversely, complex video scenes can greatly benefit
from a temporary higher bitrate than what could be sustained
by the network connection, but traditional adaptive bitrate
streaming players have no means of establishing that.
QBR from Media Melon accounts for the scene complexity
of encoded video segments at the server and provides
additional metadata hints to enable the client to plan and
optimize its buffering strategy. This allows the client player
to request a reduced bitrate for segments of low complexity
and a higher rate for those of greater complexity, subject
to available network bandwidth. The result is an improved
quality of experience, with a reduction in the overall volume of
